Here are some ideas on ways that might help\u00a0smaller organisations\u00a0to do it better.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This is particularly written with unpaid people in mind, although much of it could equally apply to someone who is\u00a0joining the team on a salary.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 <strong>Assume no knowledge<\/strong>.\u00a0 Even if the person who you are welcoming has been around the organisation for a long time it does not necessarily mean they know everything and, indeed, there is a fair chance that there is much in their new role they are uncertain about.\u00a0 In any event, retelling your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kevinlawrenceconsulting.com\/?p=241\">story<\/a> and restating your vision are never bad things to do!<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Remember to explain the little things<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is often the details of any new role that can cause the most anxiety.\u00a0 For example,\u00a0do new\u00a0members of the church council know how you normally address the chair person or when\u00a0meetings actually start (and finish!)?.\u00a0 To give an example that has the capacity to cause acute embarrassment to a newbie. \u00a0I have been part of two church councils recently, both with advertised start times.\u00a0 For one, the culture was that everyone was seated 10 minutes before the scheduled time for the meeting to begin, for the other, that scheduled time was roughly when the first member appeared in the room!<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Make it personal<\/strong>.\u00a0 Consider asking someone who has more experience in the role to &#8216;mentor&#8217; the newbie.\u00a0\u00a0 Every new person will have a particular and preferred learning style and so matching the skills of your mentor and mentee will be\u00a0important if you going to make this works really well.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Say thank you straight away<\/strong>.\u00a0 Too often we only remember to thank people whern they leave a role, but how about a card, chocolates or flowers on their first day or at their first meeting?\u00a0 This can be a\u00a0lovely way of saying thank you for taking\u00a0the job on\u00a0in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, each organisation and each newbie will be different and I would be happy to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kevinlawrenceconsulting.com\/?page_id=8\">talk<\/a> about your particular needs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whether they are joining as a new trustee \/\u00a0church council\u00a0member, volunteer or supporter, most organisations want to welcome new people well, but it does not always happen.
