How to defend a sand castle against the rising tide – 26 August 2015

2 B incoming tide and sandcastleAs I am just back from holiday, the title should not be a surprise.

Holidays are often a time when we step back and reflect, a time to dream bigger dreams about what the future for our organisations might look like – to build sand castles of possibilities if you will forgive a holiday conceit.

But then there is that incoming tide; back at the desk the waves of urgent and pressing ‘stuff’ you have to do can all too easily wash those summer ideas away.

When I was a boy, we lived by the beach and spent whole days battling the incoming tide to save our sandcastles and we sometimes succeeded (taking the garden shovel to the beach helps, but that is a another story).

If those dreams and ideas from the summer were important, make sure you don’t see them flattened.  Here are three ways you might protect and develop them:

  • Write them down, they are harder to ignore that way.
  • Write yourself reminders in your diary / to do list to work on them further and create some time and space to do so.
  • Share them with others (who have probably also been doing some mental summer sand castle building they would also like to talk about)
